1. Shrub Roses. These roses make great container plants. They come in a variety of colors and make excellent gifts. You can order them online, locally, or even through mail order. You can plant them alone or with other similar plants. If planted alone they can expand to fill the entire pot.
2. Good Luck Plants. These plants are usually in the bamboo family. Since bamboo is notorious for filling whatever space you give it, you do not want to plant this in the ground unless you have a large area. But in a pot it is perfect. Many cultures consider bamboo to be the good luck plant.
Topiary Tree
3. Cactus Bonsai. There are so many cactus plants to choose from, and they all make great potted plants. Cactus bonsai can be really fun. Since it's a cactus, it is slow growing so it takes very little maintenance. Since it's potted, it can be moved around easily. I like to put them in strategic places both inside and outside my home when I am away on vacation to cause any would-be rabble rousers to think again about entering my property.
The 7 Best Indoor Potted Plants
4. Braided Ficus Tree. Ranging in heights from two to six feet, a potted ficus is one of my favorite foliage plants. Although you have to be careful if planting these in teh ground because of their aggressive roots, you don't need to worry about that with potted ficus plants. Their beautiful leaves stay green all year around. They will loose their leaves if you make a drastic change in the amount of light they are getting, so you don't want to move the ficus around very often.
5. Any Palm Tree. Palm trees make great potted plants. My favorites are chamaedorea palms and ponytail palms. Both are easy to take care of, although they will shed their leaves like all palm trees. They range in height from two to six feet. They only need to be watered once every week or two.
6. Dragon Tree, or Corn Plant. These are very beautiful plants that liven up any room. They look unique and are great conversation starters, yet are easy to get at most local nurseries.
7. Peace Lily. I love peace lilies. They are one of the most beautiful flowering plants. They are easy to take care of and if the weather in your home is right, they can flower all year long. I like to have several growing in my home and when I need a special gift I will just clean up the pot and give the potted peace lily as a gift.

Surprisingly, or maybe not such a surprise, tobacco has good uses as a remedy for getting rid of some garden bugs and other critters. Be cautious and use wisely.
Here are seven ways that you can use tobacco and nicotine as a remedy for garden and yard pests.
Topiary Tree
1) Put a cigarette in a quart of water and let it stand overnight. The nicotine will release a poison into the water that you can use to spray and kill insects with.
Seven Good Uses for Tobacco
2) Prepare a mixture of one half cup of powdered garlic with one cup of compost. Add one cup of tobacco (a good use of cigarette butts) or use organic tobacco. Blend this mixture into the soil around the base of your aphid infested plants.
3) Use a mixture of tobacco dust and pyrethrum powder to make a solution to spray on an infestation of obliquebanded leafroller. This critter is a greenish larvae that rolls and ties the leaves of many vegetable plants, flowering plants, shrubs and fruit trees to make their home.
4) Scatter tobacco dust around the base of a peach tree to discourage peach tree borers.
5) If you have symphylan bugs in your garden, commonly called the garden centipede, drench the soil with a mixture of water, garlic and tobacco. This little critter is a voracious eater of young plants so you do not want them in your garden.
6) If you have a problem with moles or gophers, shred a package of cigarettes (the non filtered variety). and drop the shredded pieces down their holes.
7) Drop a package of chewing tobacco into a gallon of boiling water. Take off the heat, and let it cool down. After it has cooled, strain the solution. Pour a cup of the solution and a half cup of lemon scented liquid soap into a sprayer. Spray the solution around your yard and outside of your house to get rid of spiders.
Caution: Since nicotine is a poison, be sure to keep it away from areas where children play and where pets roam. Also, keep it away from fish and roses. It will make roses turn black.

When you are growing a bonsai tree, you may have observed that the bottom does not grow as fast as the top, a "phenomenon" known as apical dominance. This makes pruning a bonsai a necessary process in order to enhance its growth and maintain its shape.
Not all plants respond well to pruning, especially when it is done at an inappropriate time. Pruning a bonsai properly entails knowing the type of plant it is and which time of the year is best to prune it. Usually though, pruning of new growth is done within the growing season, while pruning of old growth is carried out during mid-autumn.
Topiary Tree
A bonsai which is remained unpruned for sometime will eventually look like a typical tree, and creating a bonsai means starting the whole process all over again. Thus, to prevent this from happening, pruning a bonsai should be done habitually.
Pruning a Bonsai
Pruning a bonsai can be done in two manners: finger pruning and leaf pruning. Finger pruning is pinching the new growth that sprouted at the top or does not complement the shape of the bonsai. Pinching is done by removing the growth using your forefinger and thumb. Your other hand should be holding the branch where the growth is attached to. This pruning method for coniferous bonsai is better than using scissors because it does not create an unnatural impression on the foliage.
Leaf pruning a bonsai is mostly done during the summer. Deciduous bonsai and tropical plants are pruned by cutting around 60% to 90% of their leaves using fine scissors. The remaining leaves should be enough to supply energy to the tree.
The previously discussed pruning techniques are those which can be done above the ground. Pruning a bonsai can also be accomplished by trimming below the ground. Root pruning becomes essential when the root has grown too much to be in the same pot.
Thus, you need to thin it down to make it fit more comfortably inside the pot. However, when trimming the roots, make sure that you do not cut off more than what is necessary that you will deprive the tree of enough feeding roots. Watering should be done after this process.
Pruning a bonsai is basically like giving a person a nice haircut. There are various styles and methods of achieving a particular look to choose from.

Are You on a budget? Okay, one way around this is to start your house-plants by way of seeds, or cuttings. Cuttings can be acquired from friends and family; and seed can be bought at most plant nurseries.
Topiary Tree
Cuttings- I shall delve into the matter of how to take and plant cuttings, in another article. For now, I will just give mention to a few plants that will readily strike from cuttings.
House Plants - A Love Hate Relationship - Part 2
Happy Plants, or Dracaenas, are quite easy to propagate from cuttings. It was once believed that they could be grown even if the cutting was planted upside-down. Er, no!
If it is colour, or flowers, you are after, Impatiens, or Busy-Lizzies, are very easy to strike. Fuscias, too.
Leaf-colour - Aluminium plant, Freckle-Face, Mother-in-Laws-Tongue for green/white combinations. Coleus, for striking, vibrant, reds and yellows.
Big Shiny Leaves - can't go past Monsteria Deliciosa.
Ferns - readily strike from plant divisions and come in a multitude of varieties and shades.
African Violets - fairly simple to strike, provided you have the patience.
Philodendrons - climbers, for the most part, easy to strike and come in a variety of shades of green.
Where you get your cuttings from, is up to you. Friends are always a good mark.
Seeds - I shall delve into the matter of seeding methods, in another article.
Those listed below are easy to germinate or to acquire.
Palms are fairly straight forward to germinate, only requires seed.
Impatients, Begonias, cyclamen, polka-dot, or freckle plant, for colour - from cuttings.
When Not to Panic.
If you have little or no experience with growing plants, the whole thing can be a daunting prospect.
Here are a few guide-lines for you:
If the leaves on the bottom of the plant go yellow and/or fall off - DO NOT PANIC. You have not killed it. Leaves, just like flowers, reach a use-by date, no different than the loss of a few stray hairs from your head - doesn't mean your going to go bald overnight, or die.
If ALL the leaves on the plant go yellow and/or fall off - 'something' has gone wrong. Now, this could be for a variety of reasons, but most likely it will be either: too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry. Too Hot: If the leaves have changed colour and are a little bit crispy, too close to the heater, maybe, or in full sun behind glass. Or, you forgot to water it. Tsk, Tsk! Too Cold: Plants just sitting there? No new growth,or browning of the tips - possibly in a draft. Could also be, too close to a window in cold weather - glass transfers the cold really well. Too Wet: Probably the biggest problem with new-comers to indoor-gardening, namely, over-watering. Coming a close second, under-watering.
When watering potted plants potted plants , it is best to soak the pot. By this I mean, put the pot in a bucket and begin filling it with water, until the water comes up to just beneath the top of the pot-lip.
Leave it there until air stops bubbling from the soil, about 20/30 minutes. Then remove the pot and allow it to drain, just until water stops actually flowing from it.
This extra care allows the soil to soak up lots of water, removes air-pockets and gives the plant some extra moisture reserves.
How can you tell when an Indoor plant has the correct amount of watering?
Just because a pot looks dry can be a bit deceiving and does not necessarily mean it needs watering again.
Dig your finger into the soil of the pot, about an inch and a half. The soil should be a darker colour, soft and feel DAMP - not wet.
If this is so, leave it for a day or so, if it feels too dry, obviously, it needs water.
If it is WET, you are probably over-watering. First check that it is not sitting in water, like a full saucer, remove it and drain.
Sad Plants:
Too often people panic as soon as a plant droops a bit.
Best bet is to first rectify any of the causes given above, then leave it alone for a day. If the plant was too hot, or too dry and providing it is not actually crispy, it will rectify itself within hours. If it was too wet, or cold, you should see recovery within days.
These are only the obvious remedies, the more, less obvious, I shall address as we go along in later issues. Most indoor plants will appreciate being sprayed with a fine mist of water once in a while. Makes them look fresher, too.
Too difficult.
If it all proves too difficult, there are some magnificent 'fake' plants available, these days. This does not mean failure, with the time constraints of work and family these days, sometimes 'real' plants are just not practical. So good are these 'fakes', that many experienced gardeners can be fooled at a glance. Me, included!
Then again, some people just do not understand plants. I myself, just do not understand cars - I can live with that.

Modern kitchens are often designed with a large amount of space for decorating above the cabinets, but unfortunately, it leaves most people at a loss for what to do with it. Using a bit of creativity and putting some thought into proper arrangement and selection, you can easily turn that space into a beautiful focal point or a subtle addition to your current kitchen decor. Silk Flower Arrangements are a great way to enhance these spaces.
When designing the above-cabinet space, a few rules apply.
Topiary Tree
You can fill in the full space with accessories of varying heights and shapes, tied together by color or theme, or perhaps even a run of garland, greenery or berries.
If that's too full, you can make small groupings of accessories, pottery, plants, or art that you place in strategic locations, leaving open space in between for added drama.
Avoid the monotony of spacing single items evenly across the entire run of cabinets. This lacks drama, artistic creativity, and cohesion.
Silk Flower Arrangements - Making Use of the Space Above Your Cabinets
Here are just a few ideas:
Pottery: Decorative "kitchen" pottery is a nice idea if it is in keeping with the desired theme of the kitchen. Arrange small groupings and add some small silk flower arrangements in between.
Lighting: This can be as complex as installing fixtures such as track lighting or can lights, or it can be as simple as placing a string of white miniature Christmas lights or a long strand of rope light on the inside of the cabinet's molding. This affect is especially dramatic for holidays or special occasions and this lighting can also be used to enhance your other decorations like your silk flower arrangements.
Plants and flowers: Because of their low maintenance and hypoallergenic indoor qualities, using beautiful silk flower arrangements and artificial plants suits this purpose most closely. Select blooms that accentuate the colors of your wood and paint. Add greenery that has both depth and height - perhaps a draping ivy on one side and on the other, a pot of variegated grasses and earthen balls. A topiary collection is also a very suitable option so long as the rest of the kitchen's flavor is bold and elegant.
Art and photos: This is where the line between tacky and tasteful can easily be crossed. Start by creating your arrangement, but be sure to give yourself room for change. In other words, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Don't use your cabinets as a place to display senior pictures or wedding photos. If you have photos or prints of still art that are framed with exceptional quality, that is a good place to start. Otherwise, scrap the art-photo idea altogether.
Baskets: Again, this is another design element that can easily be done wrong. Use only fine, high-quality baskets and only a few at that. Perhaps you could fill one or two of the baskets with the artificial plant or silk flower arrangements mentioned earlier.
Holiday decor: For Christmas, decorate a miniature Christmas tree. For Easter, perhaps an Egg Tree or some lively silk calla lilies displayed in acrylic water. For fall, an arrangement of tall block candles of orange, brown, and rust accompanied by autumn leaves and a bound stalk of wheat or straw. For summer, perhaps a lovely decorative floral wreath would be perfect.
Overall silk flower arrangements are one of the best options because of the wide variety of colors and styles available but also because of the shapes and configurations that they come in. Plus they're long lasting and virtually maintenance free.

Trees that are used for bonsai are very different in their needs, and each tree reacts to indoor conditions differently. When we say that Bonsai is grown up indoor that means that it is grown outside of its usual location. For example: a tree from cold area would have a lot of troubles to adapt to conditions in warm area that is why we would need to create artificial conditions that would suit that tree. A lot of trees can grow better in good artificial conditions but all of them have special needs that have to be maintained for a tree to stay in good health.
Many great gardeners grow their bonsai inside. For example a lot of different types of pines can easily be grown up inside and will survive without a problem because they can tolerate slight change of condition as difference in lighting, temperature, pressure and others. A lot of people try to make special indoor circumstances and use different technique to make their bonsai adapt to new environment as good as possible. That is why some people have special rooms with refrigerators or heating devices and machines that can regulate the moisture in the air. Growing bonsai indoor will force you to create as natural environment as possible that is why you will need to create seasons which are essential for a tree to survive. The best position for a room with bonsai is the one that has a window facing east, because an open window will give bonsai full spectrum of light which will mimic the natural circumstances.
Topiary Tree
Some people think that growing bonsai indoor is not really the best thing, some trees like Buddhist pines and Chinese elms show the exact opposite while these trees can adapt to indoor climate easily if they are given enough time to acclimatize.

Trees and shrubs are the kinds of plants you'll see in just about any garden, or somewhere nearby. They offer such huge variety for the beauty and pleasure of your garden.
Different Types
Topiary Tree
Powerfully vertical, pyramidal, conical - you'll find shrubs and trees of all shapes. There is also variety in growing patterns, and some even have scents, like the needles on cypress and juniper trees.
Enhancing Your Garden With Beautiful Trees and Shrubs
Weeping trees are some most delightfully scented varieties. Both the Katsura tree and the Cercidiphyllum Pendulum smell like caramel and come with stunning fall colors.
Silver Lime is another scented variety. Sweeten your garden with Buddleja Alternifolia's honey scent in the early summer. Working with trees and shrubs can definitely be exciting because they offer so many ways of bringing "excitement" to your garden.
Every Setting Works
The amazing thing about a tree or shrub is there's at least one for every garden. Even small gardens benefit from them, although you must be careful not to crowd out all the sunlight. A formal garden will go well, for example, with Blue Atlas Cedar, Scots Pine or Cedar of Lebanon.
Accent the Whole Property
When you put in a tree or shrub, you're not just adding to the garden itself but the entire property. Therefore, consider how much shade your tree is likely to throw as it grows. Too much will make your garden seem gloomy and keep your other plants from much-needed sunlight.
And consider placing a bench under the tree to create a comfortable spot for garden observation.
Privet is generally one of the more common hedging choices, but box is equally good, especially for clipped topiary. With box, you can make elephants, teddy bears, peacocks and pyramids. Unfortunately, you may not like the smell. Some people say box smells like urine.
Rest for Your Weary Soul
In windy parts of the country, shrubs and trees are a great way to get some respite. You can create a whole different world in your backyard if your property has an orientation suited to this.
Eucalyptus trees grow really fast, so you might consider them as wind barriers. Also, they have a honey scent in their flowers and a minty one in their foliage. Pruning can keep them at an ideal size, and the blue leaves add an exotic touch to your garden plot.
Trees and shrubs are an important part of our ecosystem, and including them in your garden could be an ideal means of creating the type of atmosphere you love.

People give each other flowers for several different reasons. Sometimes they are in trouble and want to make amends. Sometimes they give out of obligation and their heart is not really in it. For the other times, here are the top seven reason why people give each other flowers.
1. Mother's Day. Every self respecting person gives at least some thought to getting their "life-givers" a beautiful floral bouquet on Mother's Day. Nothing show Mom you care like a dozen red roses, except maybe removing your nose ring for the day.
Topiary Tree
2. Funerals. Letting the remaining family members of the deceased know that you care for them and are at least attempting to feel their pain is what funeral flowers are all about. In these situations, there often are no words to express how you feel, so say it with a gift of a dozen lavender roses.
Top 7 Reasons Why People Give Each Other Flowers
3. Baby Dedications. A baby dedication is when the parents of a baby want to seek the Almighty's hand of protection for their precious child. They ask their pastor to pray for the child. A bouquet of lilies is the perfect gift for these loving parents.
4. Baby Births. Giving flowers to the new mom is a great way to let her know how special she is and how precious her new baby is in your life. A multicolored bouquet of carnations and lilies are a great way to liven up an otherwise dreary hospital room.
5. Graduation. Your student has worked so hard. She has studied her you-know-what off and today is the day to show her that you recognize her effort and determination to be all she can be. A fresh yellow rose bouquet lets her know that you love her and appreciate all her hard work.
6. Weddings. The perfect couple stands before the large crowd of family and friends to announce to the world their undying love and commitment to each other for the rest of their lives. Of course, even the freshest of flowers won't last quite that long unless they are dried and preserved, but the gift of a snow white rose bouquet reminds the new bride and groom of their pure love for each other.
7. Romantic Dates. There is no need to wait for Valentine's Day to give the love of your life that perfect floral bouquet. The best time to give a romantic gift of a dozen long stem red roses is when there is no reason at all, except to say "I love you".
