Are you like me & racking your brain wondering what on earth to buy that cat lover in your life, this Christmas?
You've got them stocked up over the years with address books, knitting bags, soft toys & ornaments etc.
But this year you'd like to get something a little bit different & show that Father Christmas isn't stuck in a rut.
To save you traipsing around the shops hopelessly searching for inspiration- let me whet your appetite with a selection of unusual gift ideas for cat lovers for you to ponder over. Then you'll be equipped with all new ideas ready to hit the shops & internet with vigour & purpose.
1. CAT SEEDS- No- they're not for growing your own cat! They are seeds for the plants that the cat in your life loves. So even if your cat lover only has a window box they'll appreciate these seeds in order to give their cat a treat. Cat's love the smell of these plants & find some intoxicating, others they'll chew on & digest to get the fibre that they need. Some garden centres/nurseries will sell a special selection of Catnip, Oats, Annual Rye grass, Wheat & common garden Lettuce especially for cats. Or you could buy the seeds separately from any gardening store.
2. CAT MOUSE MAT-For the cat lover who prefers to stay indoors, why not choose a cat mouse mat for them & their computer. They can be bought with specific cat breeds on. There are always cute kitten ones available & classics like the black cat. Computer stores & Stationers should stock these. It might also be worth looking on EBay & related Internet sites.
3. CAT MOBILE PHONE CHARM- Presuming that your cat lover is happy to exist in the 21st Century then it is more than likely that they own a mobile phone. THE latest accessory is the phone charm that adorns your mobile phone & personalises it at the same time. Most department stores will stock a wide choice of these.
4. SUBSCRIPTION TO A CAT MAGAZINE-There are magazines about absolutely everything nowadays. I'm aware of at least 3 specialist cat magazines & I bet you could find more. They all carry details of subscription charges & at this time of year they normally advertise special deals like ½ price or a free (cat associated) gift for taking the subscription out. Even if your cat lover buys themselves a monthly magazine you could save them that monthly expense & put yourself in their good books by having got them a present that lasts them the whole year!
5. CAT PORTRAIT-To make a present for your cat lover that more personal, what about a hand-drawn/painted portrait of their favourite feline? Artists advertise in the ads at the back of Women's' magazines and also on the Internet. Prices start from as little as £5.00. But you will need a photo of the feline in question for the artist to copy from.
6. CAT CANDLES- Cat shaped candles are appearing in the shops now. Some are so beautiful that it would almost be a shame to light them. But whether your cat lover chooses to use them or display them wouldn't detract from their uniqueness.
7. MECHANICAL CAT-This is THE latest toy. Although it's a toy it is the perfect gift idea for cat lovers everywhere. It retails about £40.00 & is to be found in most toy shops & department stores. I'm not sure of its correct name or who makes them but they are lifelike & actually meow. If you dangle string in front of them they'll even try & catch it. They're absolutely gorgeous & of course don't eat anything or have to go in a cattery when your cat lover goes on their hols.
8. CAT WEATHERVANE- For the cat lover who's got everything. What about a cat weathervane? A lovely piece to put aloft their house for all to see & comment upon. This may have to be especially made or if you're lucky some department stores & local garden centres may stock some.
9. CAT WIRE TOPIARY FRAME- Staying outside the house- a lovely unusual idea is a cat wire topiary frame- so that even your cat lover's hedge can be cat shaped. Once again larger department stores or your local nursery may stock these. It might also be worth looking in some of those specialist Christmas catalogues that come through your door this time of year.
10. CAT FAIRY LIGHTS- Remaining festive a set of pussy cat fairy lights for the old Christmas tree would go down well & could get brought out year after year- when you'll always be remembered too for choosing such a lovely inspired gift!
Happy shopping now that you have gift ideas for cat lovers a plenty.
Merry Christmas everybody & a purrfect new year!

OK, OK, so you've been to Disney World about 87 times.
But how would you like an exclusive, private tour to see Walt Disney World as few ever will? As a former Disney World Cast Member I have volunteered to be your tour guide through the behind-the-scenes world of what makes Disney World so magical.
You'll have fun learning about a variety of backstage locations. We'll also take a peek under the Magic Kingdom Park and see Cast Member costuming, wardrobe, the so-called tunnel system, Disney's nursery and tree farm, waste treatment facilities and other service areas.
Let's start at the end, with sludge. Sludge from the water treatment facility is everybody's business dried out and then used on the grounds for fertilizer. Reclaimed tinkle water is used for watering grass and plants. The water valves are labeled "Reclaimed Water - Do No Drink" Thanks for the heads up, Mickey!
Now we'll visit the plant nursery. Remember all those cool and cute topiary designs around the park? Well, this is where Disney Cast Members grow and shape the topiary critters. All this coolness takes time; about seven to eight years to grow a single topiary character. One of my personal favorites is a smiling Mickey Mouse holding a Disney Vacation Club [http://www.edisneytimeshare.com] sign near the entrance to the Wilderness Lodge Hotel.
Then there is the parade storage area behind Splash Mountain. The back of Splash Mountain has many doors labeled, for example, "Access to Scene 31". Here you'll see Mickey Mania, Spectromagic, and the Electric Water Parade paraphernalia. You can walk around and look at the parade pieces all you want. But no photos please. The Spectromagic floats are made of mesh, so the driver can see out, and are covered with small Christmas-type lights controlled by computers. There is also a small fan to cool down the driver. If you or the kids have always wanted to look inside the Sea Witch float from The Little Mermaid, this is your big chance.
When I was a Disney cast member I strolled the tunnels on my breaks and dined in the underground cafeterias. Very romantic. Actually, the tunnels are fake. Since the water table is very high in Florida it would be costly to keep real tunnels dry. Disney thus built a neat system of utility corridors at ground level and then covered them with dirt. This made a new ground level one floor higher. The Magic Kingdom was built on top of this. Therefore, Main Street USA is actually on the second floor.
The "Utilidors" make a circle around the park connecting all of the Lands and rides. There is also a utility corridor under Main Street USA connecting the entrance to Cinderella's Castle. All of the Magic Kingdom utilities are nestled within the Utilidors. There is water, electricity, fiber optic cable, and the ultra-cool Vacuum Trash System.
The Disney World Vacuum Trash System has become a model for several other very large buildings, and even parts of cities and municipalities. The system uses pipes about two feet in diameter to suck all the trash to a central collection point.
Another unusual device in the Utilidors supplies the various odors to different parts of the park. There is one under the bakery that releases chocolate cookie smell into Main Street. Mickey wanted to use real cookie smell, as I recall. But, alas, there was no way to produce non-stop chocolate chip morsels. So, these odor producer machines are used for cookies and that just-right smell in many other places; smoke, orange groves, and so forth
The Utilidor also has various Cast Member services like a Credit Union, a 2-Hour Film Developer, cafeterias, and lockers. Costuming and wardrobe is also located down here. When I worked there I was always amused to see my favorite characters wandering around half dressed or carrying their heads. The walls of the Utilidors are color coded. There are also many maps and directional signs to help lost Cast Members (like me).
So when you visit Disney World for your 88th trip, keep an eye peeled for a sudden and magical character appearance. Mickey or Minnie may just pop out of a hidden door leading from the Utilidor below. And you'll know their secret!

Is your driveway landscaped? It should be.
This includes the driveway itself, as well as the design elements on both sides. All sorts of materials from softscape options to hardscape are available to make your driveway attractive.
Make A Good Entrance
As the entrance to your home, the driveway should not be neglected. It can either be a scar on the other landscaping around the home or it can add depth to the entire look of your home. You don't need to spend a lot of money on it either. You can be creative and choose attractive features, and have a very low cost landscape that is welcoming.
Make sure that you take everything into account before choosing your elements. For example, if you are looking for minimal work, do not plant a flower bush at the end of your driveway where the plants can be ruined by those in your neighborhood. Instead, use an attractive fence or a rock garden.
Another important aspect is the footpath to the home. Do not use any design elements that will be in the way of the normal foot traffic. You don't want to visitors going out of their way, or worse, trampling your plants to reach your door.
Hardscape Choice
You have many options -- common ones include walls and fences, which can add distinction and accent your driveway. A small fence can add character and color to the landscape. Use hanging baskets or lanterns on the fence for more charm.
A large rock can be especially interesting, particularly when it has multiple colors. You can plant grasses and small flowers in the cracks of stones to create even more decorative looks.
Softscape Choices
On a limited budget, just landscaping along the sides of the driveway is an excellent option. It will cost little, yet add lots of beauty to your landscape design.
As for softscape options appropriate to driveway areas, many things will work, such as a flower bed or groundcover along the driveway. This will create a border that is interesting and separates the lawn from the actual driveway.
Ornamental trees and shrubs can do the same thing along the edge of the driveway. Shrubs can be cut to become topiary, which will add even more design elements to the look of the driveway landscape.
Another thing to consider is the curved driveway. If your driveway has a curve in it, a great idea is to add a focal point -- something to make a statement. For example, you can have a beautiful tree, a flower bed, or a rock garden there. Whatever it is it should be beautiful because the curve will focus attention at that point of your driveway. You can use water gardens, a wishing well, as well as many other types of elements to enhance this area and have it look amazing.
Doing these landscaping operations can completely transform the entrance to your home. In a simple, affordable way, you can add character and depth to your landscape design around your driveway.

1. Arizona Poppy. Also known as "orange caltrop", this abundant annual plant looks the California poppy so the untrained eye. This plant grows to about nine inches tall and is beautifully green with yellow flowers with an orange center. Visiting insects love this plant as it is a major supply of nectar.
2. Cactus. Cactus come in both flowering and non-flowering varieties, and all shapes and sizes. Some are pretty and some look downright scary. They are the easiest of all plants to take care of since they require so little water. If you get a lot of sunlight, anything in the cactus family is great. Be careful if you have kids or pets.
3. Yellow Daisy. This plant is beautiful and hearty. Blooming in the early spring, it will provide brightness to your garden for much of the year. The yellow daisy is also extremely resilient when it comes to grueling desert temperatures that would make most plant weep and die in record time.
4. Desert Spoon. The dependable plant, with the botanical name of dasylirion wheeleri, has light yellow flowers that resemble grain. They can grow up to six feet tall with an equally impressive spread. This plant was a source of food and fiber for native Americans. You never know when that fact could come in handy.
5. Joshua tree. This majestic tree is the largest in the yucca family. It can live to be two hundred years old and forty feet tall. Most don't grow over 15 feet however due to less than optimal soil and weather conditions. The Joshua tree flowers are distinctive bell shapes of twelve to eighteen inches in length.
6. Brittle Brush. This common desert plant is a small deciduous bright yellow flowering shrub that looks wonderful in backyard gardens. They require very little water due to their ability to trap moisture in the air in their hair-like skin. Flowering from March to June this plant gives amazing depth of color to any garden.
7. Aloe Vera. Although I already included the wide category of cactus above, the aloe vera plant needs a special and well-earned distinction. The medicinal plant should be in every yard, especially if you or your neighbors have kids that scrape and cut their knees and arms in the course of everyday play. The soothing gel of natural aloe vera can not be beat. Forget about sending cookies to your neighbor, just break off an aloe leaf and actually help someone out.
The 7 Best Garden Plants For Dry ClimatesCasa di Francesca Single Ball 12 Topiary Tube. Duration : 4.35 Mins.Firstly, I am not into fancy dress dinner parties, mainly because I don't like the concept, this is just a personal choice of mine. However, I do expect my guests to arrive dressed better than if they were going down to the local pub or a casual restaurant.
It's All in the Planning
By this, I mean it's very important to plan every aspect of your dinner in advance, starting with your invitation. Unless it is a very formal dinner, where you would send invitations in the mail, a personal invitation by telephone is the way to go. You should explain the occasion, if there is one. If there is no specific occasion, explain how you're gathering friends together to enjoy a special night. If you are having a theme to your menu, let them know so they know what to expect. Advise the time (allow for pre-dinner drinks) and date, and your invitation is complete. Invitations should be made two to three weeks ahead, and this will confirm the number attending.
Planning the Menu
The menu is obviously the most important item of the evening, so work out your menu at least two weeks ahead. For example, one summer I gave a dinner party called 'An Italian Affair to Remember'. I adapted my menu so it had all Italian ingredients from canapes through to entrée, main course and dessert. Once you have chosen a theme, make you sure you stick to it. However, if you don't have a theme, you should really try to keep to a similar style of cooking. It is really confusing to offer, say, an Italian entrée followed by a Chinese main course!
To make sure you are not confined to the kitchen all evening, keep your meals very tasty but very simple. Choose meals that can be ready well in advance, at least 24 hours before, then all you have to do is cook or finish them on the evening of the dinner.
Drinks
It is usually accepted that pre-dinner drinks are offered, so have a selection of wines, spirits and spirit mixers, beer, soft drinks and distilled water with lemon slices. For the dinner - red wine, white wine, desert wine and, of course, water. Appropriate wines should be served with each course.
Decorations
This is the fun part - I'm going to give you an example of the decorations I used for 'An Italian Affair to Remember'. For the table decorations, I designed a menu for the three course dinner, doing it on-line in red and green type on white card paper, the colours of the Italian national flag. I used a crisp white tablecloth, with red and green place mats, red for female and green for male. I also used coloured name tags of red and green card with silver handwriting. This makes it more comfortable for guests when they know who they are sitting with. The table napkins were also in keeping with theme by using red and green tied up with white string.
To brighten up the table and keeping with the Italian theme, for the centre piece I filled several low vases with red flowers that had green foliage on them, which fitted in with the Italian colour scheme. I placed a line of these vases along the middle of the table - it looked amazing!
A great budget tip if you want to follow this idea, zigzag shiny vessels along the middle of the table. I've used recycled food tins, each holding one or two showy red blooms. It looked very stylish and is a great way of presenting your arrangement on a budget. Alternatively, instead of flowers you can use small topiary plants along the middle of the table. To add further ambience to your table and decorations, place several small candles among the table decoration - they really gave it a wow factor!
When I completed the table decorations, I went to work on the surrounding area. Being a summer dinner party, I set up the table under our pergola, which has a very high pitch roof. I draped red, white and green soft floating fabric (bought from a budget fabric store) in the roof area and around the edges of the pergola; this gave it the effect of a logia, with fabric draped all around the perimeter. To keep with the theme, I sourced where I could buy some small Italian flags to hang from the ceiling. That was easy, because the local Italian club were more than happy to supply them.
The next part was the lighting, a very important aspect of any dinner party. You need lighting that creates the right ambience and air of romanticism while allowing people to read the menu.
I lit as many candles as I could and also had two chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. These were very old chandeliers that I found at a recycling store and painted, while the third light feature was the pièce de résistance. It looks like a candelabra, but it's really a metal tray through which my partner drilled three holes to attach hanging chains. All these together created a great look.
To complete the ambience, I recycled some old glass ceiling lampshades by painting them in a translucent red paint and placing them throughout the garden as candle holders. As you can imagine, with the candle light, beautiful table decorations, great food and wine, plus soft Italian music playing in the background, the outside entertaining area was like a scene lifted from the Italian Riviera!
Alternative Tips and Ideas for your Glamorous Dinner Party
Solar lights in the garden are great, especially if you use a lot of them
Olive tree foliage or Bougainvillea foliage and flowers are a good alternative for your table (very Mediterranean plants)
Have the fabric draped over your front gate to get your guests in the mood
Make sure the music is Italian and romantic
Different alternatives for place mats - mirror squares, laminated pages of newspaper, laminated page of Italian script (or laminate whatever theme you choose)
Brown paper bags opened up and then turned down - used as small candle holders in the garden
Rolls of brown paper used as a tablecloth - a very natural and earthy look
Red wine glasses look great on a white tablecloth - add to the colour theme.
