The striking topiary trees standing sentinel at the entrance to Riverview have been something of a landmark in the area for many years, but they are just an indication of the magnificent grounds which lie beyond -- the legacy of a 30 year long passion for gardening. The work carried out in the garden was inspired by the many places he had visited around the world. There is a fountain and waterfall within a large pond and over a smaller pond there is a Chinese style bridge. The garden flows beautifully from one area to another and includes an Italianate fountain at the bottom of an avenue of blossoming cherry trees. Elsewhere, there is a totem pole and a log cabin he built following a visit to Canada, complete with bar, power and lighting. There is an avenue of topiary trees lining both sides of the driveway. He saw this effect with Cyprus trees whilst visiting the Beverley Wilshire Hotel in California, and he loved the way they cast an army of shadows, depending on the position of the sun. Once home, he decided to recreate what he had seen using Leylandii conifers and the drive is now lined with these tall velvety columns of evergreen. In the grounds, there is a bowling green complete with guttering and a fully enclosed lawn tennis court.
